| Ministry says rational sharing still allowed |

Renting a house or apartment and sharing with others is allowed, while dividing the room into several units to rent to a group of people is prohibited, the Beijing News reported Monday, citing Jiang Wanrong, head of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
The ministry on Dec 16 issued a set of rules to standardize the house rental market, including one rule that stipulates that a room cannot be divided into a number of small units and rented out to a group of people. This rule has aroused widespread debates as many are concerned that low-income tenants will be wiped out of large cities. The rules will take effect on Feb 1.
Jiang explained that the practice of dividing an apartment into several smaller units is against current regulations as it would change the original structures of the house and can pose dangers to the whole building. In addition, tenants' rights cannot be guaranteed under such circumstances and those tenants can take up too many public resources, bringing disputes, Jiang said.
Renting and sharing the original apartment is allowed, Jiang said.
He added that middle and low-income people can also rent low-rent or public apartments. |
